Public Living Room
Set up a Camerados Public Living Room.
Our friend Maff who set up the Association of Camerados tells a brilliant story, of setting up a public living room in a town where he didn’t live. He organised an event and got lots of local people along, and told them the plan.
A public living room consists of all the things you find in a living room: sofas, chairs, lamps, rugs, cushions, games, cups of tea, biscuits, and people. Someone in the room asked Maff if he had all these things.
He said, “Well, no, I don’t.”
And waited. He didn’t try to fix the problem. Then, after a while, a voice from the back asked, “What about a piano?”
Maff said, “Yeah, a piano would work.”
And he waited again. After a while, another voice said, “I’ve got a van, I could help you move the piano.”
And after a while the whole room had conjured up a public living that took place in the town centre the next day, without Maff having to provide anything.
We’ve almost always had a Public Living Room at our Fêtes – they’re part of the welcome and the decor, and they provide a space for people to chat with no agenda.
